Top 10 Reasons to Work with a Pelvic Floor Therapist While Pregnant

I get asked all the time, “can pelvic floor therapy help me while pregnant?” Below are my top 10 reasons why you should see a pelvic floor therapist during this time in your life.

  1. We can help you understand what is going on with all the changes in your body and help you navigate what’s normal vs not

  2. We can educate you on positions to consider laboring and delivering in that feel best for you and your body

  3. We can help address pelvic floor tension and work on helping you learn how to elongate your pelvic floor muscles actively to help during the pushing phase

  4. We can address aches and pains throughout pregnancy and give you hope that you “don’t just have to live with this until you deliver”

  5. We can provide you exercises that can help mobilize the pelvis and trunk while incorporating breath work to make room for baby, increase your comfort, and help prepare for birth

  6. We can prepare you with ideas on mobility immediately postpartum to help ease one part of the transition into motherhood

  7. We can help manage constipation symptoms throughout pregnancy

  8. We can teach you easy body mechanics tweaks to help decrease stress/strain with activities

  9. We can provide ideas of how to take care of “down there” postpartum to help with tissue healing

  10. We can help you maintain an exercise program with appropriate modifications as needed to keep you strong, healthy, and confident throughout your pregnancy

Going through pregnancy can be a rollercoaster. It can be really hard to navigate through all the changes and understand what’s normal during pregnancy and what’s not. There’s an insane amount of information out there in books, on the web, and social media which can make an even more daunting task to decide which voices to listen to. Birth providers, whether OBGYNs, midwives, or whomever you choose to work with do their best to help go on the journey with you but typically your appointments with them are short and infrequent. Working with a pelvic floor therapist allows you a longer, dedicated session to work with a trained provider to help continue guiding you along your journey in motherhood.
